svchost.exe taking over my computer?
My computer was working fine until the other day. I was using firefox and all of the sudden it started going extremely slow. I checked the processes and saw that all the instances of svchost.exe were using tons of memory. One was over 100K.
I ran my anti-virus, spyware checker, and registry cleaner and it didn’t help. I did a google search for this problem and tried everything, nothing seemed to work. One site suggested the problem was with Windows Update. I had it turned off before because it constantly needed to update and kept restarting my computer. I installed all the updates I was missing, then disabled it again, and it still doesn’t help.
Now my computer keeps freezing after a few minutes of being on, and my programs are using almost 100% CPU. What can I do?
Also, I’m running Vista home 64 bit, if thats any help. If you need more info please ask.
virus ! sounds like a bad trojan

The only other time i have seen anything like this was due to a faulty Java update that ate up 100% of my CPU
If you use java, uninstall it, if that doesnt work, try doing a system restore to before it started happening.

All the svchost.exe’s should be running under the SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE or NETWORK SERVICE usernames. Any running under a normal username are suspicious. Also, in Vista’s Task Manager, you can see the command line for each process this way:
1. In Task Manager, click the View menu item.
2. Click Select Columns.
3. Check Command line.
4. Click OK.
All copies of svchost.exe should be running from the directory:
C:\Windows\System32
Any running from elsewhere are definitely bogus.
Also, it’s quite likely that a copy of svchost.exe will be using an inordinate amount of memory while Windows Automatic Update is looking for new updates. If a copy of wuauclt.exe is running, that might be happening. Under Windows XP, at least, this is a heavy load on the CPU.
Hope that helps.
